G-A-Y Days(s)- Tales of the City (1993)- DVD Rip (480p-x264)

tales of the city- 1993
This was a request fill. I've seen Tales of the City...twenty years ago. To be honest, I've forgotten everything about it. That doesn't mean it was bad, it means I'm more than likely suffering from Early Onset. I don't even remember what I did yesterday, let alone twenty years ago. Safeway dating??? That's about it. Enjoy!

tales of the city- 1993

From Culture Shock:

In 1993 Armistead Maupin's comic novel about San Francisco in the '70s, Tales of the City, is adapted for television by Britain's Channel 4, to be aired the following year in the United States on PBS' American Playhouse. With its interwoven plots and interrelated characters, some of whom are gay, the upcoming miniseries creates a stir in some circles.

Telephones ring off the hook at public TV stations across the country, both before and after Tales of the City first airs in January 1994, with some viewers demanding the show be cancelled. Responding to state legislators' threats to recommend budget cuts, PBS feeds two versions, one as produced and one edited to remove scenes such as two men waking up in bed together. A week after the miniseries' premiere, the Family Research Council's Robert Knight appears at a public hearing of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the agency which funnels government monies to PBS. He terms the series "a slick piece of gay propaganda." He is not alone in characterizing both CPB and Tales of the City, which depicts recreational drug use and openly homosexual relationships nonjudgmentally, as "anti-family, anti-religious," and "pro-gay." Reverend Don Wildmon's American Family Association advocates budget cuts, sending each member of Congress a videotape with clips the AFA deems particularly salacious.

tales of the city- 1993

In Oklahoma, a PBS station airs the edited version, but even this triggers a legislative campaign against the program and public TV. In Georgia, the state Senate approves a nonbinding resolution demanding that Georgia PTV "cease airing it and never air it again." And in Chattanooga, TN, WTCI receives hundreds of negative calls, as well as a bomb threat, and pulls Tales of the City from its schedule an hour before airtime.

But fans of the program flood stations with their own calls. Tales of the City garners critical raves and PBS' highest ratings ever for a dramatic series.

Two years later, PBS chooses not to make the sequel, based on Maupin's More Tales of the City. Maupin accuses PBS of "caving" to conservative protestors, and People for the American Way, which monitors anti-gay groups and public policy, labels the decision "a bad omen for free speech." Showtime, a commercial cable channel, picks up the miniseries, now produced by Montreal-based LaFete Productions, and airs the sequel, once again to critical acclaim, in 1997.

In addition to its record-breaking ratings, Tales of the City receives two Emmy nominations, and the National Board of Review honors it as Best Miniseries. It also wins the Peabody Award, the most prestigious in broadcasting. Armistead Maupin remains a powerful and popular voice in both literary and gay circles.

G-A-Y Day(s)- Kate Davis/David Heilbroner- Stonewall Uprising (2010)- DVD5 (NTSC Format)

stonewall uprising
When you treat people as if they're subhuman and steal their voice and their liberty, they'll eventually turn on you. The Stonewall uprising was when the gay community finally had the sense to push back against a system that had failed them at every turn. The Mike Wallace appearance and the jaded history of the Atascadero State Hospital would make Josef Goebbels proud. This is some scary, scary history. Another "must-download" I dare say. Enjoy!

the stonewall uprising

From Stephen Holden at the N.Y Times:

“The average homosexual, if there be such, is promiscuous. He is not interested in, nor capable of, a lasting relationship like that of a heterosexual marriage.” So declared Mike Wallace in authoritative voice-of-God tones in “The Homosexuals,” a tawdry, sensationalist 1966 “CBS Reports,” excerpted in Kate Davis and David Heilbroner’s valuable film, “Stonewall Uprising.” Funny how yesterday’s conventional wisdom can become today’s embarrassment.

The most thorough documentary exploration of the three days of unrest beginning June 28, 1969, when patrons of the Stonewall Inn, a seedy Mafia-operated gay bar in Greenwich Village, turned on the police after a routine raid, “Stonewall Uprising” methodically ticks off the forms of oppression visited on gays and lesbians in the days before the gay rights movement. “Before Stonewall there was no such thing as coming out or being out,” says Eric Marcus, the author of “Making Gay History: The Half-Century Fight for Lesbian & Gay Equal Rights.” “People talk about being in and out now; there was no out, there was just in.”

the stonewall uprising

At the time of the riots, homosexuality was illegal in every state except Illinois. Before the laws were changed, one commentator observes, gay bars offered the same kind of social haven for an oppressed minority as black churches in the South before the civil rights movement. The cultural demonizing of gay men in public service films depicted them as at best, psychologically damaged and at worst, ruthless sexual predators. Lesbians were nearly invisible.

The same “CBS Reports” peddled the medical opinion, since discredited, that homosexuality was determined in the first three years of life. The movie has ominous vintage footage of electroshock aversion therapy being administered, accompanied by the suggestion that it might be a promising cure for what was widely regarded as a mental illness. The most unsettling historical tidbit concerns the treatment of homosexual patients at a mental hospital in Atascadero, Calif., where some were injected with a drug that simulated drowning, a process that one commentator describes as “chemical waterboarding.”

the stonewall uprising

It is a sad indication of the marginalization of homosexuality in the late 1960s that media coverage of the Stonewall riots was mostly after the fact. And even then it was cursory and often condescending. Because so little photographic documentation exists of the unrest, the film relies mostly on eyewitnesses, including Seymour Pine, the now-retired police officer who led the initial raid of six officers and who describes it as “a real war.” The details of the raid are reconstructed by several who were present, including Howard Smith and Lucian Truscott IV, journalists for The Village Voice whose offices were nearby. The film focuses on the first night of the unrest.

As one rioter remembers: “All of a sudden the police faced something they had never seen before. Gay people were never supposed to be threats to police officers. They were supposed to be weak men, limp-wristed, not able to do anything. And here they were lifting things up and fighting them and attacking them and beating them.” It was the first stirring of what came to be known as gay pride. “This was the Rosa Parks moment, the time that gay people stood up and said no,” Mr. Truscott recalls. “And once that happened, the whole house of cards that was the system of oppression of gay people started to crumble.”

Cracker- Series 2 (1994)- DVD Rip (480p-x264)

cracker- series 2- robbie coltrane
We've taken the last couple of days off to rest our weary souls after the Rasta jag, but we'll be back tomorrow with guns-a-blazin' and new cool posts. Until then, here's an extremely clean and easily downloadable x264 rip of Cracker. It's for those that need a Fitz fix. We should all need a Fitz fix. Out.

cracker- series 2- robbie coltrane

From The Unofficial Guide to Cracker:

For the second series, in 1994, Cracker's run was extended to nine episodes - three stories of three episodes each. The quality, again, was extremely high, although the second story (about a suburban cult surrounding a school headmaster who was having an affair with one of his students) was noticeably the weakest of the three (and the first not to have been written by the shows creator, Jimmy McGovern). The first story, To Be A Somebody, risked controversy again with its treatment of a difficult subject - the Hillsborough disaster of 1989. It was a subject close to McGovern's heart, which he later further developed as a separate docu-drama. The result was arguably the best and most moving Cracker story, helped by an award winning performance by Robert Carlyle as Albie. Once again, the story pulled off the balance between understanding Albie's story and his suffering, and seeing the horrific results of his crime. This time the damage hit closer to home - because Albie's third victim was Bilborough himself. In an intensely dramatic and painful sequence, Bilborough is led to Albie's flat and stabbed by him, dying within minutes while his colleagues desperately race to reach him. Ironically DS Beck had already interviewed Albie and let him go, so he was partly to blame for the death.

The episode shocked regular and casual viewers alike, and the repercussions of Bilborough's death lasted well beyond the end of the story. Bilborough's replacement was DCI Wise, a more experienced officer than Bilborough, a more confident personality. Played by Ricky Tomlinson, Wise brought some more humour to the show and developed a more affable relationship with Fitz. While Fitz, Wise and Penhaligon began to work more closely together, Beck became increasingly isolated, racked with guilt over the death of Bilborough. In story three of the second series, Men Should Weep, his emotional turmoil spills over into violence. During a series of rapes, Beck himself puts on a mask identical to the one the rapist wears and rapes Penhaligon, threatening her with a knife. Penhaligon's reaction to the rape and then to the discovery that her attacker was Beck is extremely well played by Geraldine Somerville, and the storylines is sensitively handled in a serial that is another strong contender for the best Cracker story.

An American Family- The Complete Series (1973-2003)- VHS Rip (XviD)

"But leclisse...hardly anyone knows about the Loud family. Why in Gods name would you be posting such a trivial early seventies television program? So what if An American Family was the very first reality show ever, Lance Loud was the first openly gay person in the history of American television, and the program foreshadowed the ever-so-slow degradation of consumer based American society. That's boring!"

"Whatever..."

Here's An American Family. Welcome to the American Dream!

LoveAndSqualor's editorial note: We posted the first three episodes a while back, and then had some trouble uploading the rest of them to Megavideo. They're all streaming now, along with links for downloading.

The VHS rip quality is godawful, but it's still substantially better than the other versions out there. We will upgrade when we can (apparently, the library at NYU has a set of DVDs sourced from the masters, so if anyone has access and could make us a copy, we would be very very appreciative...)

leclisse note: This is a complete re-working of our older post, pre-Cinema Verite. I cannot believe what a crappy Lance Loud HBO got for the part. They (HBO) made the horrid mistake of giving the bad actor a David Cassidy hair-do too, and Lance would have never been caught dead with a David Cassidy hair-do. Did they not bother to watch the original program? Other than the Lance mis-step and the poor dialogue handed to James Gandolfini, Cinema Verite was a very interesting program. Tim Robbins and the oh-so-beautiful Diane Lane were the perfect Bill and Pat Loud.

For all you young retards out there in RetardLand that thought The Real Life was the first reality show...well...you were sadly mistaken. We have An American Family to thank, or curse.

From subci.com:

An American Family was television's first reality show, shot documentary style in 1971 and first aired in the United States on PBS in 1973. The show was twelve episodes long, edited down from about 300 hours of footage, and chronicled the experience of a nuclear family, the Loud family of Santa Barbara, California, during a period of time when parents Bill and Pat Loud separated (in a infamous and powerful on-camera sequence) and Pat filed for divorce.

The Louds had five children. One of them, Lance, was a gay 20-year-old man who occasionally wore lipstick and women's clothes and took his mother to a drag show in the second episode of the series. He lived in the Chelsea Hotel during its Warholesque heydey and this is captured in the second episode (Holly Woodlawn was his neighbor and appears in several scenes, along with Candy Darling, Jackie Curtis, and other famous drag queens of the time). Scholars sometimes mention that Lance came out of the closet on TV, but this is technically incorrect — he was simply gay without announcement or drama; his family says that they had known for quite a while. As such, Lance was the first openly gay character on television and has become something of a gay icon.

On airing, the show drew over 10 million viewers — phenomenal viewership for PBS in 1973 (or even presently) — and drew considerable controversy. The series was widely discussed in the media in 1973, and the Loud family appeared on the cover of the March 12, 1973 issue of Newsweek magazine.

In 1983, PBS broadcast AMERICAN FAMILY REVISITED, and in 2003 PBS broadcast A DEATH IN AN AMERICAN FAMILY, shot in 2001, visiting Lance and his family again at Lance's request. Lance was 50 years old, had gone through 20 years of addiction to crystal meth, and was HIV positive and dying of hepatitis C. In the winter of 2001, a few months after 9/11, Lance Loud was gone. Far from a conventional "happy ending", watching the entire arc of this brilliant masterpiece from start to finish is unforgettable: Lance's downfall from a young, vibrant and magnetically alive kid in 1973, to a man reaching middle age in 1983 (with shorter hair but still cheerful) to the incredibly painful final images of him in 2001(at the age of 50), walking with a cane, losing teeth, looking like a non-survivor of a concentration camp ... it is a truly shattering experience.

mission impossible- season 2- 1967-1968
We posted season one of Mission Impossible awhile back, and it was such a pain-in-the-ass for L&S that I honestly didn't think there would ever be a season two posted. But (I'm supposing) realized that Martin Landau was still a cast-member, and it would be an abomination not to trudge through his tenure. Here's the fruits of her labor.
