I thought Neu! would be a fitting way to end Hansa by the Wall Night! This band, much like Can and Cluster, were major influences on Bowie's Berlin work. Hope you enjoyed Berlin Night! Now, get to bed and dream of Heckel woodcuts.

This is Neu's perfect album. The reunion that transcended all their previous history. Perhaps the lack of pressure brought everything into clarity for just long enough. Neu '75 begins with the totally typical motorik drivingness of "Isi", but all the guitars have been substituted with a schoolroom piano or remedial efficiency and beautiful oboe like sythesizers that billow and coo like Eddie Jobson, when he was still trying to sound like Eno hadn't left Roxy Music on Stranded. "Seeland" follows, a floating drifting sunset of a song with weeping dual lead guitars like an awesomely slowed down New Age version of Thin Lizzy around "The Boys are Back in Town". Okay, that's exaggerating, but the guitar is between that first description and Bowie's Heroes title track. But then, this LP and La Dusseldorf were the two blueprints for Big Dave's Berliner period. The side finishes with the Damo Suzuki-type vocal of "Leb' Wohl", another schoolroom piano from another kindergarten - drifting, wistful and charming with its obvious tapes of waves lapping on a beach.

Side 2 begins the transformation with the classic Ur-punk of "Hero", in which every proto-punk device is thrown into its six heavenly screamed minutes. Klaus Dinger sings like a man possessed (though not possessed with a singing voice) over banked Steve Jones massed guitars and the double drumming of life. This is followed by the 10-minute Krautgroove of "E Music" - a kind of mantric Bavarian shuffle that subtly pulverises the flesh over a long time. Then it's back to "Hero" again, here re-named "After Eight", and a much wilder version. Klaus Dinger has by now given up even attempting to be coherent and just drools the words out. It's the best Neu! LP of all. Buy it and find out.

We're rounding the bend right about now, so I thought I'd throw in some Kraftwerk. I didn't have time to upload any Cluster. That'll have to wait.

Although Autobahn was indubitably their most important work to the outside world, Trans-Europa Express was a massive album for Kraftwerk themselves. The follow-up to Autobahn, Radio-Aktivität, had been met with slight bemusement and vastly reduced success. Thus, Trans-Europa Express was a make or break record. The pressure was on, and so, Kraftwerk had to respond. They did so in a number of ways.

Like all post-Autobahn Kraftwerk records, Trans Europa Express has a unifying theme across all its tracks. Actually, that's not strictly true - Trans Europa Express has two. The first, and most obvious, is a celebration of Europe. Putting the album in context, it's easy to see why they did that - they were, after all, the most famous musicians from a country still stereotyped and stigmatized by large portions of the rest of Europe. Symbolically, they were making the first move to reconcile the differences. They tempered this with an undercurrent of train travel ("Metall Auf Metall", for instance, literally refers to the sound of metal on metal made by a train on its tracks), which is a clear homage to Autobahn. The other concept is one of identity, noted on "Spiegelsaal (Halls Of Mirrors)" and "Schaufensterpuppen (Showroom Dummies)" - the latter the album's biggest hit, and something of a thematic precursor to their smash "The Model".




The fact that Kraftwerk use identity as a concept may seem slightly strange, but to me, it makes sense. Radio-Aktivität had been a departure for Kraftwerk, being as it was the first of their releases to be composed entirely of short, easily digestable songs. It was also their first totally non-Krautrock album - almost all the signs of that movement had disappeared. It was a very conscious, very deliberate move - note how the band now refuse to acknowledge that they released anything before Autobahn, when it was in fact their 4th album. Seemingly, Kraftwerk were having a few problems with their own identity. Trans-Europa Express found them settling comfortably into their newly constructed identity. Die Mensch-Maschine would, of course, see them inverting, mocking, deconstructing, and reinventing that identity, but that's another story.

The music here is delivered with a great confidence, suggesting that either Kraftwerk were not intimidated by the pressure, or that they were revelling in their new way of working. Possibly, both. They sound more comfortable in their own skins than on Radio-Aktivität, that's for sure, and even moreso than Autobahn.

Iggy Pop has always been the greatest rock comedian. As leader and frontispiece for that most extreme wing of rock nihilism represented by the Stooges, he at once defined and ridiculed the options left to punk rockers after "My Generation." The nihilist attitude meant plenty when it was a reaction to the pop status quo best exemplified by Dick Clark, but once nihilism itself became the status quo it was trivialized into mere decadence, a fashionable synonym for boredom.

Iggy's criticism is a brilliant, if depressing, argument in defense of that much debated assertion that rock is dead. The Idiot, recorded by Bowie, sung in a tired growl excoriated from Jim Morrison via Ray Manzarek, and steeped in the so-called "minimalist" ambiance currently so fashionable among young bands who've spent too much time listening to Iggy and taking him seriously, is the most savage indictment of rock posturing ever recorded.

Iggy's point, of course, is that rock is better off dead, but his is not the sentimental, transcendental approach to death. The Idiot is, on the contrary, a necrophiliac's delight, and Pop's next move may well go beyond flesh-tearing into live barbecue.

It's hard now to imagine the landscape of pop without Brian Eno, ex-glammer, pioneer of avant-pop, producer of repute, the very man for whom the phrase 'pop-boffin' was invented. Set in a discrete (or should that be Discreet?) group aside from his ambient works (although I'm not sure how that would stand up in a court of law), Eno's soundtracks are offered up for a tasty remaster.

Music For Films from 1976, a collection of 18 fragments of atmosphere, remains the daddy. It is arguably the most quietly influential of all his works. "Slow Water", complete with Robert Fripp's spiralling guitar is one of the album's greatest pleasures. "A Measured Room" is also fab, a minute-long shard of Percy Jones' bass at its slipperiest, with Eno piping some cheesy synth across it: think safe blown in The Professionals, and you are there.

This was Brian Eno's fourth and final solo album of the 70s with vocal tracks. In fact, as an artist, Eno would not return to the pop music format again, until his 1990 collaboration with John Cale, Wrong Way Up. When one listens to this, one can get a feel for why. The energetic, spastic nuggets that were most successfully mined on Here Come the Warm Jets and Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) had run their course. "King's Lead Hat" and "Backwater," with their punky aesthete and overtly non-sensical lyrics, sound rather forced and predictable by this time. They come off as little more than Eno regressing, when he had really shed this particular skin with his previous album, Another Green World. Still, "No One Receiving" and "Kurt's Rejoinder" make up some territory. The former acts much like "Sky Saw" from Another Green World, as the album opener with odd timbres and funky interplay. The latter features some superb, fearless fretless from Percy Jones, and the incidental croonings of Dadaist Kurt Schwitters.

The introspective pieces, by contrast, are uniformly, across-the-board brilliant. Each is like a kayak, in which the listener can paddle slowly alongside the promising vistas first set forth on Another Green World. "By This River," co-written and performed with Cluster's Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius, has got to be one of Eno's most haunting pieces. Enigmatic, minimalist...a genuine spine-tingler. "Julie with" drifts along lazily, matched equally by the sleepy, mystery of "Energy Fools the Magician," "Through Hollow Lands," and "Spider and I." Perhaps the most uneven of Eno's vocal albums, and a clear step down coming from Another Green World, but top-notch nonetheless.

"The situation that sparked off the whole thing was - I thought - highly ironic. There's a wall by the studio - the album having been recorded at Hansa by the Wall in West Berlin - about there. It's about twenty or thirty meters away from the studio and the control room looks out onto it. There's a turret on top of the wall where the guards sit and during the course of lunch break every day, a boy and girl would meet out there and carry on. They were obviously having an affair.

And I thought of all the places to meet in Berlin, why pick a bench underneath a guard turret on the wall? They'd come from different directions and always meet there... Oh, they were both from the west, but they had always met right there. And I - using license - presumed that they were feeling somewhat guilty about this affair and so they had imposed this restriction on themselves, thereby giving themselves an excuse for their heroic act. I used this as a basis... therefore it is ironic."

"I think Tony and I would both agree that we didn't take enough care mixing. This had a lot to do with my being distracted by personal events in my life and I think Tony lost heart a little because it never came together as easily as both Low and Heroes had. I would still maintain though that there are a number of really important ideas on Lodger. If I had more e time I would explore them for you…but…you can probably pick them out as easily.

We're on a jag again, so bear with us. We've been working on an epic "Berlin Week" that's going to consist of loads and loads of Fassbinder, rare Nazi UFA films und docs (still needing to find English subs), cool Ich bin Berliner muzak, and Die Brücke und Der Blau Reiter art...that is, if L&S and I don't end up murdering each other over the definition of a "high resolution image". Then something creepy stopped us in our tracks...
