I passed Brett Anderson on a west London street a few years ago, a slender man with tight jeans, hooped earring and the cheek bones of a supermodel. I stopped in my tracks and looked back, as he dwindled before my eyes unremarked into the crowd on a cold, grey afternoon. Nobody noticed him. But I did, I remembered him.

Let's go back to 1993. Before they had even released their debut album, Suede (known in the US as The London Suede) had featured on the covers of nineteen magazines. Nineteen! Forget that, before they even released a single, they featured on the front cover of Melody Maker (the UK’s premier music magazine at the time) as the best new band in the UK, a level of hype matched only perhaps by The Smiths and The Sex Pistols before them.

And boy, did they deliver! They punched with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer through the bored walls of suburbia with their testorone fuelled tales full of ambivalent sexuality, drugs and council estate delinquency and no doubt Brett appeared almost overnight on the walls of a million teenage bedrooms.




But their significance was more than this. With Anderson and Butler (the lead guitarist) hailed as the new “Morrissey and Marr”, they didn’t just produce a collection of great songs. Almost at a stroke, their appearance signalled the end of the Madchester acid house music scene. They also re-captured the spotlight from Nirvana and grunge to spark a renewed interest in the UK, with bands like The Verve, Pulp, Blur, Radiohead and Oasis taking advantage; otherwise known as Britpop.

Of course Britpop is nothing if not retro. Whilst Butler’s guitar recalls the glam rock of T-Rex, around him Anderson preens and simpers like an anguished drama queen, often adopting a ridiculous mockney accent ala Bowie. In particular, the top ten singles Animal Nitrate and Metal Mickey are standouts, capturing the angst and tension of a decadent, suburban existence.

And yet, and yet. Does it matter if Brett hails from a prosperous south England commuter town and has probably never even set foot in a council estate? Does it matter if he spent his youth studying art at University College London rather than on the mean streets that he sings about? Despite his protestations of heroin and crack cocaine addiction, would I be cynical if I suspected him of confusing the aforesaid drugs with anadin? Does it matter if he is self-admittedly “a bisexual man who has never had a gay experience”? (I think the word you are looking for here Brett is “heterosexual”).




In a way, no. Teenage experience has always been about fantasy and invention, about self projection, about adopting a studied pose. It is authentic enough for music similarly to blur the divide between fact and fiction.

The problem is not that Anderson is a poseur, but that he is a perennial teenager, an egotist too self obsessed to experience the world outside himself. Take the closing ballad The Next Life. Despite a beautiful piano accompaniment and Anderson’s soaring tragic wail, what is noticeable is how emotionally sterile it all seems. Perhaps it is a matter of empathy. The only time you could conceive Brett ever having his heart broken is when he looks in the mirror and sees a pimple.

As a teenage album about nihilist rebellion and sexual adrenaline, this album deserves the plaudits it has received. But the band are also sowing the seeds of their own destruction. Despite the commercial success of their next two albums, never has a group so quickly lost such critical acclaim. Because behind the glitter and glamour, looking beyond the triumph of style over substance, there is not a lot there. In the end, music like life is not about seeming, but about being.

Hot on the heels of its 30th anniversary re-release,[...] T.Rex's most consistent album still deserves to have its praises sung. Think of glam and you probably focus on the 1972-4 heyday with acts veering from the sublime (Bowie, Roxy etc) to the ridiculous (Mud, Gary Glitter...Jobriath anyone?). Yet this slice of pop heaven was on the shelves by autumn 1971, making it officially the first glam album in the world. What's even more amazing is how fresh it still sounds.

Bolan himself was never one to avoid a trend. In his own mind he was always a star: Stories abound of his early days as a persistent chancer in mod/psychedelic London. Yet, if John's Children and Tyrannosaurus Rex didn't hold the keys to his inevitable stardom they certainly allowed him to learn the tricks that would flower on his first hit ''Ride A White Swan''. This was the point at which he and long-term producer Tony Visconti took the hippy-dippy lyrics and Larry the lamb vocal stylings and bolted them on to good old stripped-down, four-to-the-floor rock 'n' roll. For four glorious years they never looked back...




[...]It must never be forgotten that this is as much [Visconti's] album as Bolan's (not forgetting Mickey Finn's radical bongos, ho ho). Visconti was behind so much of the glam-defining process that his name becomes synonymous with the genre. On this and Bowie's early work (Space Oddity, Man Who Sold The World) he creates a warm, spacey reverb-drenched world full of hip-thrusting libido and pouty tongue-twisting. Bolan's lyrics often approach 'back of a bus ticket' status in their throw-away couplets (''Girl'', ''Motivator'' etc.), but what shines through is the irrepressible fun the whole team seem to be having. The two monster hits (''Get It On'' and ''Jeepster'') still stand as monuments to pop concision. Nonsensical rhyme riding on swaggering guitar and drums.

Add to this at least two other utter classics (the frenzied funk of ''Rip Off'' and the touching ballad ''Life's A Gas'') and not one real filler and you've got an album that's always going to sound box fresh [...]. Life's still a gas...

When Tony Visconti was offered the opportunity to remix Electric Warrior for 5.1 sound, he set himself one crucial brief - "I wanted this version to sound like it was recorded in 1972 and mixed in 1972, if Surround Sound was already available." In other words, no posthumous remixes, no clever overdubs, nothing that wasn't there to begin with, when he and Marc Bolan closed the final tape box (in 1971, actually) and switched out the lights on the original sessions. He succeeded. Across the board, the sound is superlative, a 180-degree sweep that fills the room with the ghosts of T. Rex and jam packs your mind with some of the most astonishing melodies ever to ride out in the name of pure pop. Divided neatly between the spacy ballads that were Bolan's forte ("Planet Queen," "Girl," "Life's a Gas"), and the seductive rockers that were his genius ("Mambo Sun," "Motivator," "Monolith"), Electric Warrior was recorded just as T. Rex hit superstar status and, with two of their four singles-so-far on board ("Get It On" and "Jeepster"), it remains the consummate Bolan album. But it's more than that, as well - overwhelmingly exuberant, its flawless blending of Chuck Berry pop, Middle Earth imagery and guiltless sexuality combine to forge a timeless musicality, for even as "Lean Woman Blues" hurtles straight out of the '50s, the closing freak-out "Rip Off" races equally resolutely backwards from punk. Electric Warrior was released at the dawn of the '70s. It was still resonating a decade later - and, thanks to this marvelous remaster, it still makes a difference today.

GlamSunday: Sparks- Kimono My House (1974)- EAC CD Rip (WavPack/FLAC)

It's GlamSunday already???
Well...it's getting late in the day, so we better get a move-on.

It's strange. I never was a fan of Queen, but I've always been a big fan of Sparks. Go figure. Kimono My House is one of those albums that wipe the blues away from a really bad day, in that it's so damn perky and fun to listen to. Couple that with Ron Mael's Hitler mustache and Russel Mael's counter-tenor proclivity (along with a really tight band), and one ends up with a classic album that's never never out-of-date.

Sparks, a quirky rock band consisting mainly of brothers Ron and Russell Mael, have found popularity overseas by consistently creating clever, satirical, and often catchy songs since their debut in the early 1970s. Despite some early success, however, the U.S. charts and critics remained more or less indifferent to the duo over the next several decades, regardless of their international fame.

Brothers Ron and Russell Mael were born in southern California and began their careers in show business at an early age. At their mother's urging, both modeled for clothing catalogs for over a year as teenagers. Their combined artistic talents found a musical outlet in 1970, when the brothers and some friends from school formed the band Halfnelson, with Ron writing the songs and playing keyboards and Russell providing vocals. While studying graphic design, literature, and film at UCLA, the group recorded a demo tape and presented it to every major and minor record label, only to be met with indifference. A friend then mailed one of their tapes to rock artist Todd Rundgren, who had just recently began to explore music from the production side. Rundgren was sufficiently impressed to agree to go to Los Angeles to produce Halfnelson's first album.




The band's formative years were characterized by rough-edged guitar and primitive instrumentation. Ron Mael described some of their early percussive effects to Melody Maker: "We used to beat on cardboard boxes with reverb on and run it through amps." Their first album was completed in 1972, but was virtually ignored until their label recommended that they change their name and put a photo of the band members on the cover. Thus Sparks were born. Sparks included the Billboard U.S. top ten hit "Wondergirl," and the band was Invited to perform on American Bandstand to promote the single. Unfortunately, American audiences were disinterested with their 1973 follow-up A Woofer in Tweeter's Clothing, so, at their label's urging, Sparks traveled to Europe.




The band embarked on a whirlwind tour of England, France, Germany, and Switzerland, where they were met with open arms. The visit left an indelible mark, and Sparks would eventually find that their unique sound could only find true success in the open-minded European market. Following the tour some of the original band members moved on to new projects, and Sparks became simply Ron and Russell backed by different set musicians for each album. In 1974 the duo signed with Island Records and released Kimono My House and Propaganda, produced by Muff Winwood (brother of Steve). In a pattern that repeated itself throughout their career, both albums became hits in Europe but barely received notice in the U.S. Sparks were beginning to develop a cult American following, however, that would remain devoted to them over the years.
