The Legendary Pink Dots- The French Collection (1985-94)- EAC CD Rip (FLAC)

legendary pink dots- french collection
We've only posted only one LPD album since FTD's inception, and that's downright unacceptable. So here's some rare live Dots to listen to...while it rains.

legendary pink dots- french collection

From the liner notes:

It started with a dusty box of DAT tapes. Perhaps it was years since anyone had listened to them despite the tantalising labels, "Paris #1", "Paris #2", "Paris #3"... Indeed it was Paris where the Dots played their first residency in 1992. However, these tapes were a document of the Dots' one and only 3-nighter from the 10th to the 12th of March 1994 at the delightful theatre Passage du Nord Ouest. For this special occasion, hours of material were prepared and delivered in the certainty that quite possibly the same 300 or so people would turn up each night. Backing up that theory was the traditional shout of "Champignons" from a mystery member of the audience on each of those nights. That clarion call actually began in Montreal a few years earlier, and we still hear it whenever we play in that city. It was ambitious. Sometimes the band was a little shaky but songs were played that were never heard again on a stage. Even so, some of the best shows happened outside Paris. In Marseilles for instance at Espace Julien a few nights later. A big venue and a surprising large turnout for another French city that the Dots simply fell for. What you hear on this collection is all from that 1994 tour culled from shows in the French capital, Marseilles and Toulouse (alas, nobody remembers the name of that venue).

Even so, the Dots' French connection goes back to 1985 when they played in Strasbourg at Le Bandit. After playing in more sedatory venues in the Netherlands and Switzerland, this introduction to a French audience literally stunned every member of the band. Basically the crowed listened in complete silence as the notes were played, and would erupt like Vesuvius at the conclusion of a song. That show lasted for well over 2 hours.

We love France. The landscape, the culture and most of all, the people. We'll be back.

David Sedaris: Live at Carnegie Hall- 10/22/2002- EAC CD Rip (FLAC)

david sedaris- live at carnegie hall
This show was recorded at Carnegie Hall in 2002, shortly before the publication of Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, David Sedaris' fifth collection of essays. Unlike his radio appearances (he got his start on NPR) or his audiobooks (he's recorded every book he's published, with his sister Amy), this live show lets Sedaris interact with an enthusiastic audience and gives his low key delivery an immediacy that is lost in other recordings. Also, it's funny, laugh-out-loud funny, and if, like me, you live somewhere that isn't on his current tour schedule, it's the next best thing to actually seeing him perform.

david sedaris- live at carnegie hall

From Anna Jane Grossman at the New York Observer:

Getting to Carnegie Hall used to require practice, practice, practice, but essayist David Sedaris has found a shortcut. "You can't get any lazier than me," the gap-toothed Mr. Sedaris told a crowd of 2,800 at his sold-out reading at the concert hall on Tuesday, Oct. 22. "I mean, I read out loud. It's pretty amazing to me that you can just read out loud and be here!" Looking like a leprechaun in a striped pink shirt with a blue and red tie, Mr. Sedaris' head was barely visible above the podium as he read essays covering topics from gun control to Dutch Christmas customs to his experience with a product called the Stadium Pal-a device that collects urine in a bag strapped to the user's leg, thereby eliminating bathroom breaks. Mr. Sedaris had employed a Stadium Pal so that he could sit at book signings for hours on end.

During the question-and-answer session at evening's end, he was asked to sing, and obliged with a verse of "Amazing Grace" done to the theme from Gilligan's Island. He also confirmed a rumor that Smoke director Wayne Wang was considering making a movie of Mr. Sedaris' life. But who would play him?

"That guy Corky from the TV show Life Goes On!" said Mr. Sedaris' sister Amy at the after-party backstage. Ms. Sedaris is best known for her role as a menopausal ex-drug addict who goes back to high school in the Comedy Central show Strangers with Candy. When she's not acting, Ms. Sedaris sells cheese balls and cupcakes from her West Village apartment. Who would she want to play her in the movie? "Eric Roberts!" she shrieked.

david sedaris- live at carnegie hall

"Tom Hanks would be a good pick to play David," said Lou Sedaris, the guest of honor's elfin, 79-year-old dad. "Tom Hanks is married to a Greek, so at least there would be some association there." Slightly hunched with sad brown eyes, Papa Sedaris was in from his family's hometown of Raleigh, N.C. He said he could name all of his five children, but wasn't sure of their birthdays. "I'm proud of everyone of them in equal amounts," he said. There was a pensive pause. "But when they were growing up, if I had a favorite, it wasn't David. He was a dropout."

Did Sedaris père ever think he'd see his son perform at Carnegie Hall? "Well, I thought maybe I'd see him cleaning Carnegie Hall," he said, referring to the fact that his son was once a house-cleaner.

Nearby stood David Sedaris' boyfriend, painter Hugh Hamrick, with whom he lives in Paris. "It was touching to be in Carnegie Hall and see his little form on that big stage," said Mr. Hamrick, who was clad in a black turtleneck. "It was special. Before we came, David was worried he'd be looking out at a half-empty audience." The Transom asked Mr. Hamrick who should play his beau in the movie. "They've been talking about maybe Matthew Broderick .... " Speak of the devil: There was Mr. Broderick, standing by the door with his extremely pregnant actress wife, Sarah Jessica Parker. She was wearing frumpy red overalls, a black tube top and kitten heels. Mr. Broderick seemed enthusiastic about the idea of playing Mr. Sedaris.

The feeling was mutual. "I'd be flattered if Matthew Broderick played me," said Mr. Sedaris, entering the salon with a moist brow after spending an hour and a half signing books, programs and ticket stubs. "And I'd like for Denzel Washington to play Hugh. That would be my dream! Then I could vicariously watch Denzel Washington and Matthew Broderick having sex."

lkj- ubc sub ballroom- april 28 1984
L.K.J. live shows are really rare, and in this excellent 1984 performance, the poet sizzles. He's also backed by Dennis Bovell's Dub band, so that's icing on the cake. Enjoy!

lkj- ubc sub ballroom- april 28 1984

Notes from the original uploader:

Prepare to skank the night away, have your spirit uplifted and your mind stimlutated. LKJ's message is as timely now as ever. This is one of the most intense performances I've seen by anybody, anywhere. LKJ electrified the entire room when he burst onto the stage from the wings and tore into "Want Fi Goh Rave," and the intensity built from there. This recording sounds great to my ears, even though it's the offspring of the lowly but dependable D-6. Blackbeard's bass resonates nicely, and the Dub Band is ultra-tight.

Couple of technical things: There are several abrupt cuts in between songs. A little bit was lost in "Come Wi Goh Dung Deh" during a tape flip. There's another small cut in the Instrumental Outro.

This show requires two discs. Sorry I didn't name the tracks accordingly, but I hadn't listened to it in quite a while and I was surprised when it turned out to be two discs rather than one. Also, I did not create separate tracks for LKJ's rather lengthy intros to each song. Apologies if that's a problem. I'm not sure about some of the titles of the Dub Band tunes.Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Oh, and there's a scan of the handbill and a ticket stub for those who like to make artwork.

Set the subwoofer level to max and crank up the volume!

Curtis Mayfield- Keep On Keepin' On (1972-74)- Big 'Fro Bootleg- CD Rip (FLAC)

curtis mayfield- big 'fro- keep on keepin on
This morning I bumped into this wonderful Curtis Mayfield bootleg, so I had to share it with you folks...quickly. There not too many artists that can rival Otis Redding, Al Green, Sam Cook, and Stevie Wonder when it comes to sweet, sweet voices. Curtis Mayfield is definitely their rival, and this is definitely a "must-have" download. Enjoy!

curtis mayfield- big 'fro- keep on keepin on

Curtis Mayfield- Stone Junkie

From durian1 in the Big 'Fro Historical Notes:

When me and Big P first started corresponding we discussed what we would love to see on Big 'Fro one day. Both of us desperately wanted to do a Donny Hathaway release but we had no material and no sources for any material. My next "big one" now that the Sly was out of the way, was an Ike & Tina Turner release. But so far I only had 2 or 3 tracks for that one. Another for me was to do the ultimate Otis Redding release. Big P in turn wanted to do a Curtis Mayfield as his "dream release" - everything from the track selection to the artwork. I told him to go for it and in 2 weeks I received the master for this one and an email with the completed artwork. I changed nothing whatsoever as it was perfect the way it was. This one was 100% Big P's work. Personally I think it was a beautiful tribute to Curtis that nobody in their right mind could ever find fault with.

From the original uploader:

This was a "dream release" for me when I found it at the same traveling record convention I bought the Funkasaurus boot at. I had been listening to Curtis ALOT at the time since the Curtom label had rereleased a bunch of recordings with bonus tracks in 2000 after his death. I had never seen any boots of him, let alone any of this quality. I first seeded this show at STG back in the fall of '03 and thinking that relatively few people were familiar with him, I penned an introduction to persuade downloaders to check him out. Little did I know, there were over a thousand fans waiting to grab it. Since others who've reseeded the show since have seen fit to reprint my words, I'm including them once more. The man truly inspired me during his lifetime and continues to today. I hope he inspires you all too.

"If you haven't heard of Curtis Mayfield, do yourself a favor and give him a listen. If his superlative songwriting skills, smooth guitar licks and sweet falsetto vocals aren't enough to grab you, consider this; his messages of love, compassion, perseverance, and temperance are just as socially and politically relevant today as they were during the civil rights movement. Curtis, we miss you."

Admiral Radley- KCRW FM: Morning Becomes Eclectic- 07/14/2010- EAC Radio Rip (FLAC)

admiral radley
Today has been one of those days where I keep second-guessing myself. L&S and I are extremely picky about what we choose to post, and I'm just not sure if this Admiral Radley show should be posted. But as you see, it's here.

This band is so hit and miss, yet the two tracks that I SoundClouded make it a worthy download on their own. Ariana has such a beautiful voice on The Thread, and Jason Lytle's Red Curbs, with Aaron on drums, makes me really miss Grandaddy. It's a great song.

Who knows...you might love the tracks that I think are ho-hum. Who knows. Enjoy.

David Bowie- Vampires of Human Flesh: Scary Monsters Demos (1980)- CD Rip (FLAC)

david bowie- vampires of human flesh- scary monsters demos
So much Bowie and such little time...

Here's another excellent Bowie bootleg of demos that chronicle the progression of tracks from Scary Monsters. Keep in mind that this album has the sickest lineup an artist could ever want: Dennis Davis, George Murray, Carlos Alomar, Adrian Belew...and even Roy Bittan on keyboards. I want to say the "F" word right about now, but I won't. All I'm saying is that it's one fucking sick lineup. Enjoy!

david bowie- vampires of human flesh- scary monsters demos

From the liner notes:

"Scary Monsters and Super Creeps" was recorded in two sessions at the Power Station N.Y.C. in less than six weeks and was produced by Tony Visconti. All tracks were already in David's mind, only the lyrics were changed at the last moment. 'Fashion' was originally called 'Jamaica', 'It's No Game' us derived from 'Tired of My Life', a song written when he was sixteen years of age! 'Ashes to Ashes' was 'People Are Turning to Gold', 'Teenage Wildlife' used to be 'It Happens Every Day'.

'Up the Hill Backwards' was originally entitled 'Cameras In Brooklyn', 'Scream Like a Baby' was 'Laser', a song written at the time he was working with the 'Astronettes'.

Another track recorded during these sessions was The Cream's 'I Feel Free'. This track was often performed in the early 70ties, recorded for this album, but ultimately dropped (this unreleased version remains unheard, when Ryko released all David's albums on CD, this track was promised for release again, but dropped at the last minute for obvious reasons. David recorded a new version for the 'Black Tie White Noise' album). 'Fuje San Moto' became 'Crystal Japan', an instrumental track used for a Japanese commercial. Finally there's: 'Is There Life After Marriage', yet another instrumental track you can hear on this CD for the first time ever!

Carl Orff- Antigonae (1951)- Georg Solti/Bavarian State Opera- EAC CD Rip (FLAC)

Carl Orff- Antigone
It seems that when most people think of German opera (if they think of German opera), they see the typical viking-horned fat lady singing. Carl Orff's Antigonae smashes that stereotype with cacophonous arrangements made all the more modern by the hard-edged sound of the German language.

The first Munich production of Antigonae in 1951 was declared "the renewal of opera," and this live recording, taken opening night, captures everything from Christel Goltz's career-making performance in the title role to the audience member who is unable to hold back a coughing fit. Scans of the complete libretto are included in German, French and English.

Carl Orff- Antigone

From Anette Unger (trans. Lionel Salter):

It was to be regarded as "festival and ritual theatre" and as a "topical musical interpretation, with present-day means" of Holderlin's version of Sophocles's drama. That was how Carl Orff then described his third large stage-work, Antigonae, written in the years 1947/48. In fact it's musical point of departure and apporach were wholly taken from the speech-rhythm of Holderlin's translation (only the choruses were completely set to be sung); and with the help of a foundation of 6 pianos, 4 harps, 9 double-basses, 6 each of flutes, oboes and trumpets as well as 60 (!) percussion instruments - some newly constructed - it was possible to come up with an entirely new, unusual orchestral sonority.

But the premiere of this tragedy, on 9 August 1949 in the Fesenreitschule in Salzburb by Oscar Fritz Schuh and Ferenc Fricsay, seems only to a limited extent to have conveyed the new impulse issuing from Orff. The whole was "designed as an intensification", wrote the Sudost-Kurier on 13 August, "without, however, being able essentially to prevent exhaustion by the listener". Nevertheless, when the work was given for the second time, half a year later on 27 January 1950 in the Semper Opera, Dresden, this time with Heinz Arnold producing and Joseph Keilberth conducting, opinion was different at a stroke. And the first Munich performance of Antigonae on 12 January 1951 - also staged by Arnold, and under the musical direction of Georg Solti - definitely left no further doubt: the Press proclaimed, through Orff's new tragedy, the "renewal of opera".

Carl Orff- Antigone

This success was also due to the team at the time , who - as Suddeutsche Zeitung declared again in July 1994 on the occasion of Heinz Arnold's death - succeeded in presenting nothing short of a "model staging". Everyone who experienced it recognised in particular, according to the SZ, "Arnold's gift for a compelling stylisation with a concentration on essentials". At that time Heinz Arnold had just become chief producer at the Bavarian State Opera (then the Prinzregenten Theatre) and had already, as opera director in Dresden, attracted international attention by his forward-looking productions. In Munich too he was to shape the character of the State Opera until 1967 - beginning with that famous realisation of Orff's Antigonae, whose decor by Helmut Jurgens (a section of a cone and an inclined surface) likewise created a tremendously modern effect in its archaism and simplicity.

Christel Goltz, hailed in 1950 by the SZ as "one of the most intelligent women of today's musical theatre", seemed made for the title-part. She had already left no doubt whatever of that in Dresden. For in 1950 - shortly before her engagement at the Vienna State Opera - the former member of the Semper Opera company had rehearsed with Arnold the role of the Theban king's daughter. That meant - as she herself once related in an interview - having to rehearse the part with her husband while on her sickbed as a diptheria patient in an isolation ward. "We always recited it rhythmically there. One had to be able to speak very well, to be quite clear in diction. For Antigonae is not any longer an opera in the usual sense." And she also proved this in Munich, though she convinced by the expressiveness of her declamation, and in addition was praised for the "complete unity of the religious, the Dionysiac and the musical". From then on, Christel Goltz sang the part on all stages ("Whenever it was then played, I always sang it"), and in the year of the first Munich performance received the American Oscar as the "best foreign female singer of the year".

Carl Orff- Antigone

As Creon she had beside her Hermann Uhde of the Vienna State Opera, who was shortly afterwards to join the Munich company. Uhde was likewise not new in the Antigonae team: he had already sung in the part of Creon at the Salzburg premiere. "Of the performers", the Sudost-Kurier said at the time, "in the first place must be named Hermann Uhde: as Creon he had to sing in Sprechgesant for almost three hours non-stop, and mastered all the difficulties of this singing while being totally convincing as an actor." And Benno Kusche, engaged in Munich since 1946, also drew on his experiences in the role of the Choragus which he likewise had gathered in Salzburg. Kusche had indeed already appeared many times as an Orff singer in general, and was also to take part in recordings of the stage works Die Kluge and Der Mond.

Besides Ernst Haefliger, who came from Zurich, a whole range of further soloists were from the Bavarian State Opera Company: the tenors Paul Kuen (A Guard) and Karl Ostertag (Haemon), both extremely popular in Munich. Irmgard Barth (Ismene) and Marianne Schech (Eurydice), as well as Kurt Bohme (A Messenger), who had been under contract to the house since 1949. In all, he took part in Munich in 29 premieres or first local productions. Karl Richter wrote of him, "The iron power of fate has scarcely ever been heard with more painful brutality, but also with greater implication for this world, than in the Messenger's account of the death of Antigonae and her beloved, Haemon". And no less than Orff himself dedicated to Bohme a photo of himself that he signed with the words, "To the messenger of all messengers". By this he fairly certainly may have meant, also, Bohme's roles of the "other messenger" in Oedipus der Tyrann and the "guardian of the dead" in Lamenti. Bohme was brought to the Bavarian State Opera in 1949 by Gerog Solti, who was among the most influential figures of its artistic development, and in 1951 conducted Antigonae as the last of his Munich first performances before leaving Munich a year later.

Carl Orff- Antigone

More than 20 years later he was to say to Karl Schumann about the reasons for his departure that he was "stumbling over the position of power of a composer-in-residence whose first performance of stage work in ancient Greek costumes he had conducted. As the author made ironic comments on his own score, on reminiscences of Stravinsky and suchlike, he had joined in, not suspecting that such jests were not appropriate to him" (Paul Robinson). Today it is known that there were many grounds why Solti, who in 1946 had been appointed musical director of the State Opera when just 34 years old, ended his time in Munich in 1952 and went to Frankfurt - along with Arnold. Whether there were in face disagreements with Orff may be immaterial. What was important, however, was the Solti made an outstanding artistic name for himself in these Munich years, which were crucial for him, and was involved in bringing out 25 enormously successful new productions. Years later, this period is still being judged the most important phase of the "most daring vertical take-off in the history of new interpretation" (SZ, 21 October 1987). But already in 1951, when his departure was becoming known, the Abendzeitung of 29 June read: "Munich knows what it is losing in Solti [...] In this year he has proved his versatility and his feeling for the dramatic nerve of a work by the performance of Orff's Antigonae." Of this legendary evening Carl Orff himself was of the opinion: "That this performance in Munich was possible is among the most gratifying happenings of my whole life".

David Bowie- The Essential David Bowie Extravaganza: Volumes 1 thru 3 (1967-1972)- EAC CD Rip (FLAC)

I haven't even had a chance to sit down and listen to this (what looks to be amazing) bootleg, and since this is extravaganza territory, and any Bowie is good Bowie, I've decided to post it first, and do a proper blurb later. Wayyyyyyyyy later. Enjoy some early Bowie!

From the original uploader:

For anyone who thinks that the "Shout To The Top" 4CD set of "The Rise And Rise of Ziggy Stardust" is the shit when it comes to Bowie's BBC-sessions, think again. These three silver disc bootlegs have been produced directly from the master tapes compiled in preparation for the aborted "Bowie at the BEEB" 3CD-set set to be released on the NMC-label in the mid-nineties. The STTP-discs simply took these recordings, replete with all clicks, pops and sector boundary errors, and then boosted them by 5db... In this torrent you can find the original recordings, with most clicks & pops and all SBE's carefully removed and with no unnecessary "hard limiting". As a bonus, the discs contain a set of demo & studio recordings from 1967-1969 which have been doing the rounds on numberous bootleg CD compilations but nowhere sound as clean as they do here (they are seemingly taken directly from the master tape also used for the vinyl bootleg album, "Little Toy Soldier").

This comes with full scans of the artwork.
Enjoy!

Prince and the Revolution- Dirty Mind New York Bootleg- March 22, 1981- CD Rip (FLAC)

Oldskool Prince and the Revolution in all their funkified glory. This liberated bootleg is a great companion piece to the James Brown show that I posted earlier- a pristine soundboard from the Dirty Mind tour of '81. I tell you...this guy's guitar playing borders on nuts. An amazing show from an amazing tour of an amazing band. It's too damn good to pass up.

From the original uploader:

The Dirty Mind Tour was the second concert tour by Prince, and supported his third album Dirty Mind. The tour lasted from late December 1980 through April 1981. Teena Marie was the opening act on the 1980 tour. The 1981 US concerts were played in smaller clubs, without an opening act. Streetlight opened for Prince in Amsterdam and BIM in London.

The Dirty Mind show featured all eight songs from Dirty Mind. It also included a few numbers from the previous records, including “Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?,” “I Wanna Be Your Lover,” “Sexy Dancer,” and “Still Waiting.” In addition, the Dirty Mind left-over “Gotta Stop (Messin’ About)” was usually played. “Broken” was added to the set on the club tour and “Jack U Off” (played instead of “Broken”) was premiered on the European mini-tour.
